NS Birmingham East District
The Norfolk Southern Birmingham East District is quickly becoming one of the busiest stretches of track on the entire NS system. This 140-mile single-tracked CTC mainline stretches between Birmingham, Alabama and Austell, Georgia, which is about 15 miles west of Atlanta. This portion of the railroad has become a critical link in a large, trans-continental intermodal "rail highway". In recent years, NS has teamed up with both BNSF and UP to provide "coast to coast" premium intermodal service. This business has become very successful, and many of those trains travel this line segment. On this video, witness tireless run-through power from the foreign carriers as their long journey has almost come to an end, or in some cases, is just beginning! And don't forget about the KCS. Meridian, Mississippi is becoming one of the most-used western gateways. In fact, the daily Dallas, Texas-to-Atlanta intermodal train 220, carrying time-sensitive trailers for customers like UPS, is the "hottest" train on this part of the railroad. We capture several of these trains with their run-through KCS power. Speaking of which, foreign power is so common here that it's often more difficult to capture NS power on NS rails! Of course, a good variety of NS power is seen, including old high-hood locomotives leading trains, in addition to SD60s, the newest C40-9Ws, and even some locomotives still wearing their Conrail paint. Intermodal by far is the biggest commodity here; however, we do witness plenty of heavy manifests and even a rare Military movement. Most of the trackage runs through a very rural section of central Alabama and Georgia. At one point in time, we stop in on the small town of Bremen, Georgia where the NS Cedartown District crosses at grade. This line hosts heavy unit-coal trains bound for two Georgia Power plants to the south : Plant Wansley and Plant Yates. After capturing one of the "trans-con" intermodal trains banging across the diamond in Bremen, we capture one of these coal trains on the Cedartown District in Bremen a few miles to the north. I think we've said enough, so come along for a thrilling joyride as we visit one of the most interesting and "colorful" parts of the Norfolk Southern system. Videography by Mike Dixon.
