NS Atlanta South District

Let's take a close look at Norfolk Southern's Atlanta South District. This busy single-track, CTC main line traverses through rural, central Georgia between Atlanta and Macon. Although the majority of the traffic is comprised of heavy manifests running to and from the giant "Brosnan Yard" in Macon, the line also hosts "hot" intermodal and vehicle trains, including the Triple Crown Roadrailers. Unit trains of molten sulphur, phosphoric acid, and grain are also seen. In addition, one of the world's largest coal-burning utilities, Georgia Power's Plant Scherer, is located on this line near the small town of Juliette (where the movie Fried Green Tomotoes was filmed). Plant Scherer now burns 100% western coal, and BNSF recently won the contract from UP to deliver the coal to NS. BNSF run-through power is seen, but we also managed to capture a few coal trains with unpatched CNW CW44ACs leading. Of course, plenty of NS power is on hand, including some units still in their Conrail paint in addition to high-hood locomotives. These old beasts are unique to the NS and are living on borrowed time. The Atlanta South District also hosts a myriad of foreign and leased power, including locomotives belonging to BNSF, GCFX, KCS, WC, and more. So come take a new, exciting look at the Norfolk Southern as we visit all the small, little communities that stretch along this section of track in rural Georgia. Videography by Mike Dixon.
