Last Stand of the Four Axles

In late 2006, the NS decided to promote their GP60 and B32-8 fleet out of local service. But the admired railroad went a step further and placed these old beasts into dedicated premium intermodal service, the original purpose for which these units were purchased back in the early 1990s. Atlanta, Georgia became the "home base" of sorts for these units. In fact, all of the trains shown on this video have either an origin or destination of Atlanta. Moreover, all of the trains shown feature teams of GP60s and B32-8s pulling the "hotshot" intermodal trains. We catch quite a few trains with trios and quartets of GP60s and B32-8s, sometimes running in model sets and sometimes mixed together. When viewing the splendid action, it almost seems as if the Class I carrier was putting the EMD and GE rivals to the ultimate test, perhaps to see which model could out-last the other. As a result, we coined the phrase "Last Stand of the Four Axles". We were particularly fond of the GP60s, but were also inspired by the rare B32-8s, which are unique to the NS. This exciting DVD is an intriguing compilation and features various locations from the Southeast in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. It is one you will definitely want to add to your Southeast Railfanning collection! Ironically, the NS discontinued the use of their GP60 and B32-8 fleet in their intermodal service soon after this video went to production, which made us even more thankful for having our cameras in place at the right time to capture the action while it lasted. Filmed 2006-2007. Videography by Mike Dixon. Edited and Produced by Mike Dixon.

Northbound Atlanta to Croxton, NJ premium intermodal train 212 rounds the curve in downtown Buford, Georgia on the Piedmont Division's Greenville District with a quartet of four-axle motors in charge. The lead unit #7131 is one of the very few GP60s repainted into the "Horse Head" scheme. This train is included on the DVD. As it passes northbound by an old cemetary near Locust Grove on the Atlanta South District, a B32-8 leads a pair of GP60s on a very late-running 210. This train is included on the DVD.
