KCS Meridian Sub in Mississippi

The Kansas City Southern's Meridian Sub is the eastern-most link of the railroad's Transcontintental Division. Often referred to as the "Meridian Speedway", this interesting single-track mainline traverses the entire state of Mississippi in an east-westerly direction between Meridian and Vicksburg. When KCS took over operations of this line from Midsouth Railroad in the mid-1990s, there were just two scheduled freights per day in each direction. Today, KCS operates approximately 20 trains each day. And they do it efficiently, too, all in dark territory with train movements governed by DTC Block Authorities. This, coupled with the fact that KCS still boasts a locomotive fleet that mostly consists of older second generation diesels, makes railfanning the Meridian Sub a truly unique experience. However, things will be changing and they are changing now. The line is being upgraded to CTC and portions are already in use. And the older power is slowly being replaced by newer GEVO and SD70ACe models. This video will proove a useful tool in railfanning the Meridian Sub, portraying the daily operations in a very detailed manner, showing all types of trains, many different locations along the line, and a wide variety of locomotives. As with all our videos, we made repeated trips to the area to give a fair representation of locations, train symbols, and locomotive variety. This video is excellent to watch, as it clearly shows the progression from Dark Territory to CTC, and the slow transition from older power to newer power. And almost every location possible is shown on the entire Subdivision. So come on down south to the Land of Cotton and take a glimpse at the unique operations of the KCS Meridian Sub.
