Norfolk Southern High Hood EMD Locomotives

This video covers the time period of September 2000 through November 2005. Oh, sometimes how I wish I could be a kid again growing up watching the Southern Railway! It is truly mind-boggling in today's world of high-horsepower and high-tech locomotives that the majority of Norfolk Southern's motive power fleet from its inception on June 1, 1982, through the early 1990s consisted of various makes and models of high hood locomotives from General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD). This video pays a special tribute to the ever-dwindling fleet of high-hood EMD locomotives that are still operating on NS rails today. We catch GP38s, GP38ACs, GP38-2s, GP50s, SD40s, and SD40-2s of both Southern and Norfolk and Western heritage leading NS trains on the Atlanta North District, Atlanta South District, GS&F District, and the Krannert District in the state of Georgia.

Several highlights on the video include southbound manifest #442 with an INCREDIBLE SEVEN UNIT lashup of high hood locomotives (2 SD40-2s, 3 GP50s, a GP38-2, and a GP38AC), southbound autoparts manifest #197 with FOUR high hood locomotives (a GP38AC, 2 SD40-2s, and a SD40) running so-called "elephant style", and another day's #442 with an unbelievable EIGHT EMD locomotive consist (5 GP38-2s and 3 SD40-2s) of which the first seven locomotives were former Southern high hood locomotives! Climb aboard as we take a trip "back in time" to watch Norfolk Southern's unique high hood EMD locomotives in mainline service. Videography by Brian Morgan. Edited and Produced by Brian Morgan.
