Norfolk Southern Atlanta North District
Volume One

Our first installment of the "NS Atlanta North District" series covers the time period of September 2000 through May 2002. Norfolk Southern’s Atlanta North District runs approximately 150 miles between Debutts Yard in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Inman Yard in Atlanta, Georgia. The CTC-controlled single track mainline is one of Norfolk Southern’s busiest, seeing in excess of 40 trains per day. A varied mix of traffic is carried over this critical link between NS’s midwestern markets such as Cincinnati, Ohio, and its southeastern counterparts, such as Jacksonville, Florida. Several trains daily carry intermodal traffic bound for Austell’s Whitaker Yard, "hot" automobile parts traffic for Ford Motor Company’s huge facility in Hapeville just south of Atlanta, Powder River coal bound for Georgia Power Plant Scherer just north of Macon, and general merchandise.

I've always considered the Atlanta North District my "home" rails since the very busy mainline passes within a quarter mile of my home in Silver Creek, Georgia. In this video we will visit many locations between Powder Springs, Georgia, and Ooltewah, Tennessee, such as Pinson, Rome’s Forrestville Yard, Lindale, Brice, Green, Finch, and Dallas. We begin our journey on a mild September 2000 day by capturing a RARE #981 "high and wide" special at Dallas with high hood GP38-2 #5193 leading Conrail B23-7R #4094 and an entire train consisting of Caterpillar heavy equipment and end our trip on a pleasant day in May 2002 in Silver Creek with intermodal train #226 being led by Union Pacific Phase II SD90MAC #8530!

We will witness a nicely varied mix of foreign and NS power, including many former Conrail locomotives as well as locomotives from the KCS, UP, BNSF, SP, CSX, and CEFX and FURX leasing companies! We also catch several trains with high hood locomotives LEADING, which is a unique operating practice Norfolk Southern continues today even amongst its "sea" of GE widenose-led trains. Come along and see this busy NS mainline in northwest Georgia as you've never seen it before! Videography by Brian Morgan. Edited and Produced by Brian Morgan.

NS manifest #347 roars past Pinson, milepost 69.6H, at 12:17pm on Sunday, April 7, 2002, with a quartet of high-hood four-axle power which was a REAL treat to see! This train is included on the DVD. Southbound Georgia Power Plant Wansley-bound loaded coal train #714 takes the "C" line at Green, milepost C361.4, at 5:12pm on Friday, April 19, 2002. It was VERY NICE indeed to see three SDs on a NS coal train which doesn't happen very often these days! This train is included on the DVD.
