CSXT Hotspot : Cartersville, Georgia

This video covers the time period of June 2000 through August 2000. CSXT's former Louisville & Nashville mainlines from Etowah, Tennessee (K&A), and Wauhatchie, Tennessee (W&A), come together at milepost WA47.8 near Junta Tower in downtown Cartersville to form what is one of the busiest stretches of railroad track in the entire southeastern United States. More than 50 trains per day ply the rails south of Cartersville on the W&A Subdivision mainline. Cartersville itself has three wyes of which two, the Bowen Wye and the W&A/K&A wye, are used by Stilesboro-bound coal trains several times daily. The W&A Sub mainline is CTC and begins at milepost WA22.4 at Elizabeth (just north of Marietta, Georgia) and runs northwest approximately 125 miles to Wauhatchie, Tennessee.

The line has a rich heritage that dates to the time of the Civil War and was host to the "Great Locomotive Chase" involving "The General". We will concentrate on the segment of the W&A Sub from Kennesaw, Georgia, northward to Kingston, Georgia, as well as a small portion of the K&A mainline from Junta Tower to Wyvern. We catch several trains with Conrail-painted locomotives leading as well as a good mix of CSXT, foreign, and lease power. There is one chapter covering motive power CSXT was using in the mid-1990s and includes a few locomotives still in their predecessor paint schemes, such as Family Lines and Seaboard System.Videography by Brian Morgan.
